Weekly Journal (15)

This week I focused on the contents page and what images I wanted to use and the structure of my potential final outcome for the contents page, I did some simple editing and thought to figure the structure out first before editing in detail for example smoothing the edges of the pictures where I have cropped.

Trying out edits for Contents pictures

For the contents page I have used various pictures to create the content, I was trying to go for something that was a little different just like the front cover but yet simple and easy to read as I wanted it to be straight forward and instructive. The images I have chosen are to show some of the personality of the Artist that I was going to write about on the double page spread as I have decided not to use multiple picture in my double page spread due to the results of a picture take that I like to use for the entire page.

Weekly Journal (14)

This week was all about me trying out the different tools on photoshop and finding new ways to edit certain pictures, I tried to created the front cover image by trying out on cropping the arms out. Additionally I have tried out what fonts would suit the front cover with the image. Just simply playing around with photoshop to get ideas

Weekly Journal (13)

This week I focused on my pictures for my front cover, contents page and double page spread, I  have use two locations one was my bedroom where I have use a white sheet as a background and the other was a hotel room in Marriott which I used the bed and staircase. I have decided which ones I would like to use and which ones I did not like and want to take out, it helped me decide what my final idea would be as they have changed a little from my sketches ideas.

Photo {Likes & Dislikes}

There is an even amount of picture that I have taken that I might consider to use in my music magazine and some are pictures I do not want to include in my magazine due to me either not being satisfied with the  outcome or simply thinking that there could be an improvement .

Half of my pictures were set in my room with multiple lights used and a white sheet hung on my wall. The other pictures were taken in a hotel room in Marriott, I had the permission to shoot some shots in a bedroom setting.

In the first picture I decided to try out the poses for my side view idea for the front cover, however I did not like the look of it and the lighting did not go right for the image quality, therefore I decided to scrap that idea to using the side of the face mid shot. The outcome of the picture seemed boring and it simply did not appeal to myself anymore.

I had another idea for my front cover picture which was to use half a close up picture, I have tired multiple times however I did not like the results I was getting. One picture came out with perfect lighting, but the angle of the face that it was positioned is not what I wanted, and for the second picture, the pose and angle is right, however the lighting is not as good as the first one. I will be able to lighten the picture throughout photoshop however I am not sure if I want to use it for my main front cover photo.

--->

This front mid shot that I have taken I was very pleased with, even though the lighting was not perfect it was a decent pose and close enough shot as to what I wanted to create for my front cover,  If this will become my chosen front cover photo I will photoshop to improve the lighting and create the image more of what my idea was in the sketch.

I have tried out a few different angles and shots that I might use for my double page spread ideas when it comes to showing the music artist personality, however some cam out blurry, had dark lighting or simply a wrong pose that seemed boring. I will decide later on weather i will use photoshop to develop some of the photos or just take them out as a whole and stick to one image for the double page spread.

_________________________________________________________________________________

When I went to shoot some of my pictures in a hotel room I decided that I might use it for my double page spread if the images I previously have taken did not satisfy me.

This is one of my favourite picture outcomes that I have taken,  I want to use a black and white affect for the double page spread with the text about it. I used the sleeping beauty pose to represent that if you dream big and never let go of your dreams and work hard for it you will wake up one day with what you always wanted and dreamed of.

another idea form my initial sketches for the double page spread is to have one page with a mid shot of the music artist and then the other page would consist of the article and a few pictures above capturing the personality. I tried to capture some mid shots for this and these are two examples of that outcome. The lighting was great and the poses were soft it signifies the simplicity of her personality and how she doesn't need to pretend to be someone to show an impression, she shines through just being herself.

It is slightly a side shot as her face is facing another way shows that you haven't seen the full story of her and what she yet hasn't show you. It leaves a sense of mystery of what you will find out.

Weekly Journal (12)

Today I looked at potential locations today for my pictures that I would want to use in my music magazine. I wanted to use a white blank screen as my front cover will be more unrealistic.

By this week I have taken my pictures in two different locations, one with a a hotel room setting the other is simply in front of a white sheet that I have set up. I took multiple pictures for potential use in my music magazine.

My next plan/task is to see which picture I would like to use for my Music Magazine.

Masthead and Font - Mood Board

The way I decided to use Orthodox as my Masthead is being researching the different meanings associated with pop music and the Genre in general, as for this I went from the words opinion and approval and this came up in the synonyms, I liked how it was something that wasn't a common word so therefore decided on this

I went on dafont.com to look for some ideas of fonts for my Masthead, the ones in red are the names of the fonts that is used, I tried to go for something that would appeal to the young adults and teens.

At the end of playing around with fonts these were the top 4 fonts I was attracted to myself, in order for me to decide which one to use for my final product is by asking what some of my audiences think about the fonts and what they prefer.
However I am attracted to theses fonts as they something that is simple and classic looking yet can be seen in a new fashionable perspective. Some are bold and obvious to see while the other stands out as it is unique and not often used or seen in other products or magazines.

For my next task is  to start planning what my masthead will be named as I haven't decided yet.

Weekly Journal (10)

This week I looked back at all the work I have done so far and have edited them to elaborate more to give a better understanding to my research and findings and show my journey to creating my own music magazine. Going thought the work one by one allowed me to remember what I wanted to include in my final product, for example I looked back at my video interview and questioner, and reread my findings and I remembered that many liked the idea of my front cover photo, however recently I have been thinking to use a normal photo of the music artist, even though i planned differently, I have no decided to use the model for the front cover but also use some photoshop to create a mystery of identity at the front cover that way the audience would be intrigued on who it is and want to read the magazine to find out.

Draft of my double page spread...

At this week I started to write my draft for my double page spread in my music magazine. I formed into a question and answer layout and wrote as much as I could and think about, slowly building it into a article.

I also Created a mood board for my double page spread, to give me an idea of how I want to layout my own double page spread. I looked at the fonts, the images and the way they have structured the article to help me figure out what I wanted to use.

Photo planning and sketches...

This week I focused on photo planning, mainly for my front cover, I was thinking of what different ways I can make my front cover unique, as I decided to use photoshop to create a more mysterious or unrecognisable image so that the magazine front cover wouldn't be so bias and focus on one music artist. I then started to sketch some of my ideas down.

Afterwards, I started to plan on what I wanted to do for my double page spread, I wasn't quiet sure yet of what exactly I wanted however wrote down some of the things I wanted to include.

Photo Plan & Sketches

Photo Planning & Sketches

For my front cover of my pop music magazine, I want to create something eye catching, I will do this through photoshop, I might take a side head shot and edit the face by adding electronic devices such as wires, to symbolises that music flows throughout the body, in addition it can also indicate that music expresses peoples emotions through the beat and lyrics as it can create a mood and atmosphere of their situation explaining what their going through  an example of this is Taylor Swift and her music or Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith.
Furthermore, I could do the same photoshop idea but having the  model face forward and using half the face, this is to create mystery for the readers and make them want to buy the magazine.

Another idea that I have is to use a mid body shot from head to hips facing towards the camera, to catch the readers attention, I will have a white background and to make it easier to edit later on, on photoshop, I want to make it unrealistic the front cover, so that it does not look like a typical music magazine, I will do this by photoshopping her arms out so that it will catch the audiences attention as it will look unusual but intriguing.

My Sketches

Image Ideas

Front Cover Ideas

 For the Contents page,
I want to keep it simple, maybe use a white background again just like for my front cover picture, of  go to a canal, or use a brick wall as a back drop, I will take some shots displaying the music artist that is having the double page spread, but without extreme photoshop compared to the cover photo, so that they can see a clearer version of her, but I will also include things like little props that presents the new music artist and her personality e.g fashion, instruments, hobbies she does.

The Double page spread,
For the double page spread I will be taking about 5 or 6 Photos, one that will be big and take the whole one page and the other 5 will be little ones  with different and playful poses showing the music artist personality.

Weekly Journal (7)

After doing the questioner I have done a focus group and asked questions about my music magazine and other things to find out what they are interested in, the effect of having them speak instead of write, allows me to see and hear what they really think and feel about music in general, it gives me an idea of what they want in a music magazine.

I also started planning my sell lines for my music magazine, planning what kind of things I will include in the front cover, and also deciding what I want to use as a Masthead. I additionally also started to think about what I would use as my front cover image as that is important as that is the first thing the audiances will see, I had to think about what would attract their attention.

Q&A (Video Interview)

I interview someone for my music magazine research, His name is Mikey and his response comes form a dancers perspective giving me a better understanding as he would be passionate on music as it is an important element to his lifestyle.

In his responses he mentions that he likes to listen to different types of Genre's meaning my magazine would be suitable for him as it display multiple Genres that are currently most talked about. This confirms that for my music magazine it is best of have a variety of genre's as it will allow to widen my readers and audiences with any interests of any music genres.

He mentioned that he wanted to know about what inspired the music artist to make their music and inspires them, this helps me for my double page spread making and planning as I will able able to answer that in my article, it seems that it is something interesting to read about in a way to get to know the artist. He explains how it will let him understand why they make that type of music and how their passion came about. This tells me that when writing my article I should mention what inspires them as that is something that is intriguing to readers.

He approves of my front cover idea to not base it on a main music artist as it will be "non bias" meaning it doesn't relate to one specific Genre artist giving a more wider audience a chance to be interested in my magazine.

Music Magazine - Target analysis

This week, I went to research music magazines and its target audience, it helped me get an understanding how other magazine help get readers attention. I analysed the reason why people would go for that type of magazine. Also went deeper into research by looking at the benefits, Psychographic,Behaviouristic, Georgraphics and the Demographics going through the market segmentation which defined exactly who it was aimed at.

After this I moved on to looking at conventions of music magazine articles for my double page spread. To give me an idea on how I would write my article. I did this by looking at other articles that have been written in music magazines or in general, I looked at how they were written, in what form and if it was in 1st 2nd or 3rd person.I also looked at how they presented and layout the double page spreads to get ideas again of how I will attract the readers to read my double page spread.

Also during the week I went and wrote about my Target audience, just talking about who I will be aiming my music magazine at and why.

And lastly I worked on my Questioner for my music magazine research where I asked different people to fill out and answer the questions that I have created, after I have gotten the results I analysed them in order to see what people liked and what their opinion was on my idea for the front cover page.

My Pop Magazine Questioner

For more research for the making of my pop magazine I have created a questioner for 10 people to fill out so that I can get an idea of what people like and want in a music magazine, also to receive some feed back on some of my ideas.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Results and Evaluation

Why the Open Questions?

The reasons for having open questions instead of closed ones is so that I can get a better idea of what the audiences opinion and perspectives are as they are able to explain themselves why they choose what they chose and what they specifically look for in magazine or want, it gives a sense of them being able to contribute to the making of my music magazine as they can advice in detail of what they'd liked to see in the magazine instead of giving straight forward and simple typical answers and feedback. Their personal touch of feedback allows me to receive a better understanding as to why they request certain things in a magazine as they able to also tell me what they do and don't like. It allows me to avoid the typical thing that majority of people didn't like and then replace it to something their more intrigued by.

Audience Profile

Audience Profile

My target audience will be ages from 15 - 22 and above, and for any gender, this is because my music magazine will base on pop music, which has to do with all the latest and most recently talked about music. The magazine will relate to more of the younger generation as they will always want to be updated with the most recent popular songs and albums that come out. They will want to be the ones that are always on track with the trend, it will also relate to them as they want to know more about these artist s to where the older generation just simply want to listen to their music.

My target audience is not under the age of 15 as most recent popular artist, include some inappropriate and explicit content in their music and music videos, which I do not want them to be influenced by through my magazine. In addition it is also not for the older generation as their music style would most likely not be the popular ones and more of the slow and jazzy type.

Target Audience Example [Profile]

This is Anna, a middle class 17 years old teen. She loves all the music that is currently popular for example Beyonce, Taylor swift and Michael Bubble. She currently is in her second year of Sixth form and is prepared for her next step into university. She has recently got a few interviews booked for a part time job to support some of her extra expenses when being in university in a few months and of course has her student loan ready. Her weekly disposable income is around 5 to 10  pounds.

My magazine would be suitable for her as she has the affordable amount to purchases a weekly magazine (£4.96) but it also suits her personality very well. The magazine is weekly and has additional free items from time to time such as CD's  and extra posters . It contains personal stories and interesting facts that haven't been heard about yet. In addition it includes information on upcoming musicians and of course already popular musicians.

I'm trying to make my magazine suitable to people who are interested in new aspiring music artists, and to find out things on how they have achieved their position they are in and even things that are more personal. The theme throughout the magazine has a lot of bright colours however is able to keep it classy and sophisticated looking.

Conventions of Magazine Articles

Conventions of Magazine Articles

  • When talking about the music Artist they were introduced by their successes first.
(advertised)

  • It was written mainly in 3rd person

  • Quotes were included that has been said by the artist

  • Not many questions were included, they just describe what has been asked and write their responses.

  • The past is always brought up as to what they used to do and be recognised as and how they have transformed from then and now.

  • Questions about how they are handling their fame at the moment is asked and how they are feeling about their position.

  • Formal language is used by  the interviewer however the artist responses were mixed between formal and informal language showing that they comfortable with being asked about their personal life.

  • The interview over the phone with Beyonce was spontaneous as he describe that the interview has been pushed back multiple times and therefore always had to stay on hold and wait for her to be free again to talk.

  • The questions asked were straight forward and open, for Ariana Grande they gave her a topic they wanted to know about and she answered without hesitation, for example what her ambitions were at a young age and how they changed as she grew up. Another question was all about her first time for everything , which allowed her to just talk about anything she wanted without being forced to say something she doesn’t want to be said, she therefore had control.

  • Bold writing was used for every time a main question is asked.

  • The questions that are being asked was simple and easy to answer for the artist as they related to current events in the artist’s life.
