After doing the questioner I have done a focus group and asked questions about my music magazine and other things to find out what they are interested in, the effect of having them speak instead of write, allows me to see and hear what they really think and feel about music in general, it gives me an idea of what they want in a music magazine.

I also started planning my sell lines for my music magazine, planning what kind of things I will include in the front cover, and also deciding what I want to use as a Masthead. I additionally also started to think about what I would use as my front cover image as that is important as that is the first thing the audiances will see, I had to think about what would attract their attention.

Q&A (Video Interview)

I interview someone for my music magazine research, His name is Mikey and his response comes form a dancers perspective giving me a better understanding as he would be passionate on music as it is an important element to his lifestyle.

In his responses he mentions that he likes to listen to different types of Genre's meaning my magazine would be suitable for him as it display multiple Genres that are currently most talked about. This confirms that for my music magazine it is best of have a variety of genre's as it will allow to widen my readers and audiences with any interests of any music genres.

He mentioned that he wanted to know about what inspired the music artist to make their music and inspires them, this helps me for my double page spread making and planning as I will able able to answer that in my article, it seems that it is something interesting to read about in a way to get to know the artist. He explains how it will let him understand why they make that type of music and how their passion came about. This tells me that when writing my article I should mention what inspires them as that is something that is intriguing to readers.

He approves of my front cover idea to not base it on a main music artist as it will be "non bias" meaning it doesn't relate to one specific Genre artist giving a more wider audience a chance to be interested in my magazine.

Music Magazine - Target analysis

This week, I went to research music magazines and its target audience, it helped me get an understanding how other magazine help get readers attention. I analysed the reason why people would go for that type of magazine. Also went deeper into research by looking at the benefits, Psychographic,Behaviouristic, Georgraphics and the Demographics going through the market segmentation which defined exactly who it was aimed at.

After this I moved on to looking at conventions of music magazine articles for my double page spread. To give me an idea on how I would write my article. I did this by looking at other articles that have been written in music magazines or in general, I looked at how they were written, in what form and if it was in 1st 2nd or 3rd person.I also looked at how they presented and layout the double page spreads to get ideas again of how I will attract the readers to read my double page spread.

Also during the week I went and wrote about my Target audience, just talking about who I will be aiming my music magazine at and why.

And lastly I worked on my Questioner for my music magazine research where I asked different people to fill out and answer the questions that I have created, after I have gotten the results I analysed them in order to see what people liked and what their opinion was on my idea for the front cover page.

My Pop Magazine Questioner

For more research for the making of my pop magazine I have created a questioner for 10 people to fill out so that I can get an idea of what people like and want in a music magazine, also to receive some feed back on some of my ideas.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Results and Evaluation

Why the Open Questions?

The reasons for having open questions instead of closed ones is so that I can get a better idea of what the audiences opinion and perspectives are as they are able to explain themselves why they choose what they chose and what they specifically look for in magazine or want, it gives a sense of them being able to contribute to the making of my music magazine as they can advice in detail of what they'd liked to see in the magazine instead of giving straight forward and simple typical answers and feedback. Their personal touch of feedback allows me to receive a better understanding as to why they request certain things in a magazine as they able to also tell me what they do and don't like. It allows me to avoid the typical thing that majority of people didn't like and then replace it to something their more intrigued by.

Audience Profile

Audience Profile

My target audience will be ages from 15 - 22 and above, and for any gender, this is because my music magazine will base on pop music, which has to do with all the latest and most recently talked about music. The magazine will relate to more of the younger generation as they will always want to be updated with the most recent popular songs and albums that come out. They will want to be the ones that are always on track with the trend, it will also relate to them as they want to know more about these artist s to where the older generation just simply want to listen to their music.

My target audience is not under the age of 15 as most recent popular artist, include some inappropriate and explicit content in their music and music videos, which I do not want them to be influenced by through my magazine. In addition it is also not for the older generation as their music style would most likely not be the popular ones and more of the slow and jazzy type.

Target Audience Example [Profile]

This is Anna, a middle class 17 years old teen. She loves all the music that is currently popular for example Beyonce, Taylor swift and Michael Bubble. She currently is in her second year of Sixth form and is prepared for her next step into university. She has recently got a few interviews booked for a part time job to support some of her extra expenses when being in university in a few months and of course has her student loan ready. Her weekly disposable income is around 5 to 10  pounds.

My magazine would be suitable for her as she has the affordable amount to purchases a weekly magazine (£4.96) but it also suits her personality very well. The magazine is weekly and has additional free items from time to time such as CD's  and extra posters . It contains personal stories and interesting facts that haven't been heard about yet. In addition it includes information on upcoming musicians and of course already popular musicians.

I'm trying to make my magazine suitable to people who are interested in new aspiring music artists, and to find out things on how they have achieved their position they are in and even things that are more personal. The theme throughout the magazine has a lot of bright colours however is able to keep it classy and sophisticated looking.

Conventions of Magazine Articles

Conventions of Magazine Articles

  • When talking about the music Artist they were introduced by their successes first.
(advertised)

  • It was written mainly in 3rd person

  • Quotes were included that has been said by the artist

  • Not many questions were included, they just describe what has been asked and write their responses.

  • The past is always brought up as to what they used to do and be recognised as and how they have transformed from then and now.

  • Questions about how they are handling their fame at the moment is asked and how they are feeling about their position.

  • Formal language is used by  the interviewer however the artist responses were mixed between formal and informal language showing that they comfortable with being asked about their personal life.

  • The interview over the phone with Beyonce was spontaneous as he describe that the interview has been pushed back multiple times and therefore always had to stay on hold and wait for her to be free again to talk.

  • The questions asked were straight forward and open, for Ariana Grande they gave her a topic they wanted to know about and she answered without hesitation, for example what her ambitions were at a young age and how they changed as she grew up. Another question was all about her first time for everything , which allowed her to just talk about anything she wanted without being forced to say something she doesn’t want to be said, she therefore had control.

  • Bold writing was used for every time a main question is asked.

  • The questions that are being asked was simple and easy to answer for the artist as they related to current events in the artist’s life.

Conclusion to research

What did I find out?

After the target analysis research I have concluded to use some of the techniques used in recent music magazine for my making of my on music magazine. The research of the music magazine and its target audience helped me get an understanding how other magazines help get readers attention. Analysing the reason why people would go for that type of magazine such as glossy cover and bright and colourful images. I will be using that as well as some of the content they used for example mentioning some top listed music that is currently rated by the public.
This will allow myself to grab some of the readers attention as it is something that interests them in other magazines. It helped me give ideas and suggestions as to what to include inside my music magazine and what kind of design I want to use for my front cover.

Magazine analysis [My Conclusion]

After doing my magazine analysis, I have found out that both magazines succeed in keeping the Genre of the magazine throughout. The use of colours and Layout flow within the mood and atmosphere that has been created. Both use colours that stand out and are eye catching.
For my magazine I will use the technique of keeping the colour theme the same in order to keep a flow in my magazine pages. Allowing the readers to get the same mood and atmosphere given of throughout the magazine while reading it. The use of bold fonts  allows readers to see straight away what magazine it is as it is eye catching, I want to do the same for my music magazine so that it can be eye catching towards readers and interesting to grab.

For the double page spreads in both magazines, they have included one big picture of the music artist taking one whole page, this creates a personal story as they see the personality of the artist in that one image, for my magazine I will do the same as well as adding little images on the other written page to elaborate more on the music artist personality. I want to ensure I capture the 'Baamm its her' effect as a full one page image is straight forward to readers on who it is about.

Magazine Analysis

The Masthead has the main cover image overlapping its tittle, this could mean that the magazine itself is very well known and therefore does not need to always be visibly at the front. Everyone will be able to recognise what magazine it is.

The sub headlines advertise what other big stories that are written in the magazine, The use of yellow is to highlight and catch the readers attention as it stands out from the background colour.

Main feature headline 'Katy Perry" written in big catches the attention straight away by being straight forward.

The teaser headline is under the featured head line 'inside the court of the new queen of pop' it is a kicker start to what will be inside the magazine about the featured music artist on the front cover.

Promotion and Competition that is happening is advertised on the bottom left corner also highlighted in yellow to catch the attention of the reader, letting you know that there will be more information inside the magazine making you want to read on.

The background colour compliments the main image and the rest of the colours in the image creating a soft look for the artist in the front cover. Indicating her soft, sweet and beautiful side.

The Date is displayed underneath the masthead on the right, easy and quick to see when it is sold.

Main cover image is a full body shot up to the knees, the position is slightly to the side, symbolising her playful and sweet personality, the use of flowers give of a calm atmosphere  and could represent the 'softness' of her skin, and how she has blossomed in her career.

The Contents page has a simple layout, the use of colours blue, black, white, grey and some red give it a sophisticated and professional look and theme, the simplicity displays a straight forward message which is simply directions on what you see on each page, its clear structure makes it easier for the reader to be able to recognise where everything is incase they are looking for something Specific.  The use of 4 images of certain artist is to capture the readers attention as well give them a quick kick starter of what big stories are included in the magazine.

The double page spread includes a picture on one page of the music artist that the article is about, a fierce head shot to link and relate to the title of the article that is written in big bold white writing. The background colour symbolises the fierceness yet femininity of the music artist, it is creating a tense atmosphere however gets the reader intrigued and interested in the article. The article is written in white which is a simple colour however in this case it seems to be highlighted as dark colours are used as a background. The Bold font as a tittle is eye catching, the white indicates the pureness of her passion of music, the words used is one of the most commonly used word by Beyonce, this shows that the writer has done the research of the artist, to represent and sell the article quicker, for the audience to read. The Layout is simple and easy to read, there is a decent amount of writing which allows the reader to capture the main points of the article instead of getting bored quickly.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The masthead in this magazine is also overlapped by the main image which indicates it is well known, however there name is shorter making it more visible and easier to read, the font is bold and very big which attracts the readers attention. The colours used overall red, black and grey give it more of a male outlook and vibe, this could be seen as being targeted for male readers. The use of a mid front shot of the music artist and its pose creates a rough image towards the model which relates back to his personality and music style, the sell lines are highlighted in red, to easily catch the attention of the readers and let them know what is included in the magazine. The sell lines use short snappy words, to indicate what is included in the magazine that might interests the reader.

The contents page has used the same music artist as the one from the front cover, however a different pose, the image is a mid shot but with its face slight facing the side, this could indicate that he has many stories untold and is now being revealed in the magazine, it indicates that you will be finding out many different things about him that the reader might not have know yet, the shadow on his face creates a mysterious  and tense atmosphere which compliments the flow of the magazine from the cover to the contents page. The use of yellow in certain words is to highlight the main stories that are included in the magazine it catches the attention and makes it easier to find out the main part of the magazine if they were looking for something Pacific. The layout is simple and easy to read making it convenient for on the go reading and east to follow if there is something in particular that the reader is looking for.

The contents page has a simple layout and structure giving the impression of being sophisticated and professional, however the vibe softens up by the side head shot on the left, with writing in black all over his face, it include a red heart and red lips, giving the model a cute and happy side, The use of colours portray the story that the article is about, the big quote on the right is bold which attracts the attention of the reader, the use of red highlight its importance, it seems to look like the model is saying this as he is facing the quote making it seem like an interactive action on the double page spread. The layout is simple and clear, it suggests that it is not a boring article as it can be read easily and quick, as it will give you main points and information quicker without rambling on. The white background colour for the photo and the article suggest innocents and sweetens of this whole double page spread. It gives of a soft and relaxed atmosphere and mood , therefore making it comfortable and welcoming to read.

My Music Magazine - Plan

Weekly Journal (5)

At the beginning of this week, I learn about the conventions of
a music magazine for our next task. The way it was analysed was by sectioning it
into 3 categories, 1- Convention 2- Genre 3-  How it will inform my own planning.
This made it easier for me to get some ideas of what I wanted to do for  my own music magazine. I analysed from Mastheads to images to colours and to fonts and many more to make it easier for me to decide later on what my final outcome might be.

The Genre I picked was PoP Music, I liked the idea of how it is about all Genres nothing specific, it was more about who is popular at the moment, giving the audiences and readers an update of what is currently new. So I wanted to do the same for my magazine, also because it uses bright colours for most of the magazines making it very eye catching.

Weekly Journal (4)

During this week I have started creating my front cover and contents page
for my sixth form school magazine, I started cropping, shaping and changing the tone and colour of my images that I have taken. I played with different fonts and texture when creating my sell lines, I tried to make it look fun yet professional as it is aimed at sixth formers. I kept it simple and straight forward as I wanted the sell lines to be clear and easy to read as my main image was very colour and busy on its own.

This was also applied to my contents page as I wanted the instructions of where everything was on each page to be simple and easy so that it gets to the point straight away. The colours I used for both went well together as the tone of grey was in both pages.

Final Outcome {Try out}

I chose to use simple fonts for my magazine as it comes across more sophisticated yet modern as it its clear for the reader to see what it is about, it represents that the sixth form is simple but easy to learn from.

My main picture was taken from the art department, it is a piece of work from a student, I used this as it was fitting and appropriate for my Magazine Masthead 'Next Step' which indicates the next step of education that your son/daughter will be taking after Secondary school. I chose to use the high shot angle as it symbolises the step up of education and pathway of sixth form, it is to give the idea that their themselves will use it to move on and grow up.

The colours on the steps give the atmosphere of fun and happiness, it indicates the new adventures and events that will come with their new pathway, it symbolises the new interesting things they will learn and experience.

Weekly Journal (3)

By This time I have learned about sell lines in a Magazine, and have planned out what kinda of sell lines I would want to use for my School Magazine, I planned it by going through my results of what people wanted to see in a Magazine that would catch their attention and make them want to read it.
I shortened the main phrases that were mentioned by the students and used it as a sell line.

Another thing I was planning was Colours, what colours I would use for my magazine, I wanted to make sure that it still looked sophisticated and professional without looking or making it seem like it was boring. As my target audience is 6th Formers I did not want it to come across as childish with to much bright colours.
